What is it about Christmas Music?
What is it about Christmas Music? For many people, the time they feel closest to the Spirit of God is while listening to or singing the beautiful melodies written for this, the holiest of seasons by inspired men and women the world over. Great composers, religious leaders, pensive philosophers, and even country and pop music artists reach the height of their creativity when they weave the spirit of Christmas through their ballads, hymns, poems, and melodies. Could there be a greater power that guides their pens?
Because of its universal ability to transcend time, place, and even culture, music has been called the language of God. It can bear upon its rhythms, the very Spirit of God, and change in an instant the heart of an individual…or a nation. It carries on its cadence, our dreams, hopes, and aspirations. It is a thread that resurfacing from time to time, weaves together the sentiments of our lives. It more closely expresses human sorrow, joy, and love in its changes of tone and tempo than even the best of language can. It has the power to take us away from our present cares, and return us to a different present, a one better than before the music played.
All these wonders come through the melodies, lyrics, and rhythms of music. But there Is something more…a subtle force that is conveyed through the composer’s, artist’s, vocalist’s or performer’s personal intent. That is why the scripture says, ‘The song of the righteous is a prayer unto me’. Void of good intent, music’s power is measured, but delivered with the intent of love, or testimony, or faith, however unapparent these may seem, music holds within it the power to touch, inspire, motivate, comfort, and heal. This is your gift as you share your love of music, your love of the Christmas season, and most of all, your love of the Savior.
