The Testimony of Jesus

“The time will come when no man or woman will be able to endure on borrowed light. Each will have to be guided by the light within himself… If you don’t have it you will not stand; therefore seek for the testimony of Jesus and cleave to it, that when the trying time comes you may not stumble and fall.” -Heber C. Kimball

Many of you will find this quote familiar. We have been counseled as long as we can remember to gain our own personal witness and conviction instead of relying on that of others. As I read this quote again recently, I noticed something I hadn't before: The admonition is knowingly specific, "seek for the testimony of Jesus and cleave to it..."

“Seek for the testimony of Jesus and cleave to it”

There are testimonies of many things. There are testimonies of the truthfulness of the gospel. There are testimonies of Prophets, both past and present. There are testimonies of the restoration. There are testimonies of tithing, of temple work, and of Priesthood power.

In this forewarning, however, we are counseled specifically to seek for the testimony of Jesus and cleave to it. It is only through Jesus Christ alone that we are saved. He is the way, the truth, and the life. There is no other testimony that can substitute for a testimony of the Savior himself.
